Week 1: Notre Dame 23 Purdue 12

Another football season is upon us and after all the anticipation leading up to the first game of the year, do we know anything more about this team?  Well, um, no.  Basically all the first game told us is what we already know.  Marve is a great talent and will need some time to develop after a two year layoff (you can bunch Siller into this mantra as well).  Ralph Bolden tearing his ACL is not a good thing for the team.  The run defense is suspect and we are terrible on 3rd and 1.

The two things we didn't know is that the young secondary seems to be in good hands showing some promise and that the offensive line seems like it will hold up.  I did expect the Boilers to throw more downfield then they did being that they have a guy who can throw 70 yards and some tall receivers.  I also expected them to use Carson Wiggs more than they did.  I think when you have a good kicker you need to be cognizant of that and set up your offense to get those 3 points as often as you can.  Too many times we went on 4th down or were too risky on a 3rd down instead of just setting up for the field goal.  For the last 8 years or so, I swear that Purdue is the worst team in college football on 3rd and 1.  We tried to run the ball the first time and got stuffed and then we passed every other time it was 3rd and short the rest of the game.  This is a very bad sign that the coaches have no confidence in their offensive line or running backs and I don't blame them.

Five lessons we learned in the Big Ten

1. Shoelace is the answer in Ann Arbor: So that's what Rich Rodriguez's offense is supposed to look like. Denard Robinson made Rodriguez look like a genius in a critical game against Connecticut, as he dazzled with both his feet and with his arm. Robinson made a decent Connecticut defense look bad throughout a 30-10 win, and his speed will be tough for Big Ten defenses to handle, especially now that he can throw the ball accurately. Michigan needs to be a bit more careful with his touches after he took several big hits Saturday, but if Robinson continues to grow and his offensive line stays healthy, the Wolverines will put up a lot of points.

2. Bolden continues rapid rise: Rob Bolden has been playing college football for less than a month, but he's already making a big impression in Happy Valley. Bolden had an impressive debut Saturday against Youngstown State, completing 20 of 29 passes for 239 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception that wasn't his fault. After some freshman mistakes early on, Bolden settled down nicely and threw two touchdown passes to Brett Brackett on intermediate routes. He'll likely have a rough time next week at defending national champ Alabama, but this kid looks like he'll only get better for the Lions.
